The second oldest member of the Bettenhausen racing family, he is the son of Tony Bettenhausen and the brother of Gary Bettenhausen and Tony Bettenhausen Jr. Merle's USAC Champ Car racing career was brief and tragic. Three laps into his first Champ Car race on a paved track, Michigan International Speedway on July 16, 1972, he tangled with Mike Hiss and crashed into the outside wall. The car exploded in flames and Merle tried to climb out while it was still moving. His right arm became trapped between the car and the wall and was torn off.

The Canadian Grand Prix was notable for having produced the only Grand Prix victory for French driver Jean Alesi. This was seen as a popular victory, as Alesi was driving the red number 27 Ferrari, as famously driven by Canadian hero Gilles Villeneuve.

Emile Levassor drives a Panhard et Levassor car with a two-cylinder, 750-rpm, four-horsepower Daimler Phoenix engine over the finish line in the world's first real automobile race. Levassor completed the 732-mile course, from Paris to Bordeaux and back, in just under 49 hours, at a then-impressive speed of about 15 miles per hour. (1985)

Just five weeks after Gilles Villeneuve had a fatal crash during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, the Canadian Grand Prix was the scene of the second fatality in Formula One that year. 24 year old Italian driver, Riccardo Paletti, was killed when he crashed his Osella, into the rear of the stalled Ferrari, of pole sitter Didier Pironi on the starting grid. The Osella's nose was crushed in, severely trapping Paletti in the car. Sid Watkins, the FIA's head doctor, was quickly on the scene to stabilise and assist Paletti. As Watkins climbed over the wreckage of the Osella, the fuel tank ignited, enveloping the car in a wall of fire. When the fire was finally put out, the injured Paletti was without a pulse. It took the rescue workers 25 minutes to cut him out safely from his wrecked car. He was flown by a medical helicopter to the Royal Victoria Hospital, where he died soon after arriving. It was only his second Formula One start. Nelson Piquet of Brazil won the race. (1982)

James Hunt, the 1976 Formula One World Champion, died of a heart attack, at the age of 45, at his home in Wimbledon, London, England, (1993)

Two days previously, Hunt cycled from his home to Television Centre, to comment on the 1993 Canadian Grand Prix. Hunt was known as a fast driver with an aggressive, tail-happy driving style, but one prone to spectacular accidents, hence his nickname of Hunt The Shunt.
The movie Rush, a 2013 British-German biographical sports drama film, centered on the rivalry between Hunt and Niki Lauda, during the 1976 Formula One motor-racing season.
In the book, James Hunt: The Biography, Niki Lauda stated that "We were big rivals, especially at the end of the season, but I respected him, because you could drive next to him, 2 centimeters, wheel-by-wheel, for 300 kilometers or more, and nothing would happen.
He was a real top driver at the time."

The 2005 United States Grand Prix was one of the most controversial Formula One motor races in modern history. Out of 20 cars entered for the race, only the six cars from the teams using Bridgestone tyres (Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi) competed. The remaining fourteen entrants including Canada's own Jacques Villeneuve, all using Michelin tyres, completed the parade lap (thus having technically taken part in the race, avoiding punishment), but retired to the pits before the race started. Following several tyre failures before the race, Michelin advised its seven customer teams that without a reduction in speed in Turn 13, the tyres provided for the race would only be safe for 10 laps. The situation was worsened by the 2005 Formula One rules, which forbade tyre changes during the race; and also by a resurfacing of the circuit, which resulted in greater tyre wear. Of the six competitors, Ferrari's Michael Schumacher was the eventual winner, with his teammate Rubens Barrichello finishing second. (2005)
